Taylor Ends Florida Trip with Win over Warner
January 29, 2014
LAKE WALES, Fla. - Taylor extended its streak without allowing an earned run to 18 innings to open the 2014 season and moved to 2-0 with a 3-1 win at Warner on Wednesday afternoon in Lake Wales, Florida.
One day after topping Clearwater Christian by a 13-0 count, behind a combined shutout from Josh DeGraaf, Cody Bayle and Logan Rodgers, the Trojans again used a trio of hurlers to keep an opponent from scratching across an earned run.
Eric Kartman started the game on the hill and picked up three strikeouts in two quick frames, before Caleb Miller worked the next five and Luke Hunter retired three Royal batters on strikes over two innings for his first collegiate save.
Miller (1-0) earned the victory on the mound, allowing only four hits and one unearned run against him in five innings. Miller struck out three hitters, without issuing a walk and only allowed two runners to advance into scoring position in the efficient outing.
Taylor got all the offense it needed in the top of the fifth inning, with Jake West leading off the frame with a walk and scooting to third on a Kevin Fahy single. Brent Minta and Brian Moore then opened up a 2-0 lead with RBI singles up the middle.
The Trojans would quickly counter an unearned score by Warner in the bottom of the seventh by adding an insurance tally in the eighth. Austin York and Danny Moorehead led things off with singles, before Fahy knocked home York for the final tally of the afternoon.
Alex Senyshyn, Grant Hendershot and Moorehead all collected a pair of hits in the victory, with Moorehead also swiping a base.
Taylor is not scheduled to play again for over two weeks, when it heads to Lebanon, Tennessee, for a three-game series at No. 10 Cumberland on February 14 and 15.
