JACKSON, Mich. – Gage Gongwer earned the Crossroads League Baseball Pitcher of the Week Award from Feb. 12-18, as announced by the league on Monday. The honor is the sophomore's first of his career and the first for No. 9 TU's baseball team this season.
Gongwer worked 2.1 scoreless innings and racked up four strikeouts in relief during Taylor's 11-9 win on Friday, Feb. 16, over the previously undefeated, first-ranked Southeastern Fire (11-1). The right-hander entered the ballgame in the fifth inning with two outs, a runner aboard and the Trojans trailing 6-3. Gongwer got the crucial out he needed to in the fifth, and he went on to become the pitcher of record as he tossed shutout sixth and seventh innings and Taylor's lineup roared back to take the lead.
The Wakarusa, Ind. native's win on Friday marked the first of his career, and he moved his strikeout total to six this season in 4.1 innings. Gongwer headlined a number of strong pitching performances during TU's series with SEU.
As a whole, the Trojan pitching staff recorded 29 strikeouts and yielded 19 runs (14 earned) for a 5.00 earned run average during the series against a Southeastern lineup that averages 8.75 runs per game.
TU (3-7) looks to continue its strong pitching when it is scheduled to host Indiana South Bend (1-3) at Winterholter Field on Wednesday at 3 p.m.
