GOSHEN, Ind. – Taylor took full advantage of the wind blowing out, launching five home runs in a doubleheader sweep of Goshen on Saturday, with Mady Foy and Mackenzie Noah throwing back-to-back complete games allowing two runs each.
The Trojans rocketed four home runs in the opener, an 8-2 victory, in which every run besides one scored on a homer.
Livie Lehmann began the long ball parade in the third with a solo shot to give TU the lead, and an inning later, Brooke Sanchez roped a two-run shot to push the lead to 3-0.
After Goshen (16-10, 5-7 CL) hit the first of two solo home runs to cut into the deficit, Jersey Tannehill came to the plate and hit her first-career homer, a two-run bomb to push the lead to 5-1.
The final runs of the game came in the top of the seventh as Madisyn Standridge scored on a passed ball before Delaney Barton joined in the fun with an opposite-field blast for more insurance runs for Foy.
Foy dealt with a bevy of baserunners but held Goshen to a pair of solo homers in the complete-game victory. Foy delivered four strikeouts and was buoyed by a terrific defensive effort, which turned three double plays, including throwing a runner out at home.
The Maple Leafs shut down the TU offense for most of the nightcap and scored twice for a 2-0 lead heading into the fifth inning, one of which was on another solo home run.
Grace Mullins pinch hit to begin the inning and drew a walk after falling behind 0-2. Standridge laid down a sac bunt and reached on an error by the second baseman. Aleyah Rastetter ripped a single up the middle to load the base and put pressure on Goshen. Lehmann stepped to the plate and delivered the key hit, her second home run, and a lead-flipping grand slam to center field.
Taylor (17-13, 9-7 CL) tacked on an insurance run in the seventh when Tannehill ripped an RBI single, and then Noah closed out the contest in the bottom of the inning for a 5-2 win.
Noah was terrific with a complete game victory, allowing six hits and not walking a batter while striking out three.
Taylor returns to the friendly confines of Gudakunst field after a two-week road trip to face No. 7 Marian (23-5, 11-3 CL) on Tuesday, April 2, for a doubleheader beginning at 4:00 pm.
