TU Stumbles Against Goshen
UPLAND, Ind. – The Taylor women's basketball team stumbled to a 70-61 loss against Goshen on Saturday at Paul Patterson Court, giving the Trojans their third-straight defeat.
Taylor trailed by just two points at the 3:24 mark of the first quarter, but an eight-to-zero scoring burst by the Maple Leafs made it a 19-to-nine Goshen lead at the end of the period.
The Trojans scored six of the first eight points of the second quarter to cut the lead down to six, but GC rattled off 10 unanswered points in the next four minutes to increase Goshen's lead to 31-15 with 3:36 remaining until halftime. TU put together a seven-to-two run in the final 1:32 of the first half to stay within eleven points of the visitors at the break, 33-22.
Goshen (11-9, 5-3 CL) controlled the paint in the opening half, outscoring Taylor 22 to eight in the paint and outrebounding the Trojans 22-14, including 10 to four on offensive rebounds.
In the second half, GC's Sydney Stein outscored the Trojans 10 to eight in the first 5:08 of game action to give the Maple Leafs a 43-30 advantage with 4:52 left in the third period. Sydney Huffman responded with a bucket, but the rest of the stanza belonged to the visitors, as Goshen recorded the final twelve points of the quarter, giving the Maple Leafs a 23-point cushion after 30 minutes of play.
GC opened the fourth quarter with a deuce and a triple to give the Maple Leafs their largest lead of the game, 60-32, with 8:08 to go in the contest. The Trojans did engineer a 22-to-five scoring run in the final 5:54 of the game, but it was not enough to pull out the victory, resulting in the 70-61 final tally.
The Maple Leafs continued their dominance on the boards throughout the contest, outrebounding TU 45-32 overall and 18 to nine on offensive rebounds, which led to a 19-11 edge in second chance points for GC.
Kendall Bradbury notched 15 points and nine rebounds, while Josie Cobb added 14 points for the Trojans. Monica Compton provided eight points and five rebounds, Aubrey Wright had an all-around line of seven points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal, and Huffman contributed a career-high six rebounds for the Purple and Gold.
Taylor (9-11, 4-4 CL) will travel to Mishawaka, Indiana to face Bethel (4-16, 1-7 CL) in a Crossroads League matchup on Wednesday night at 7:00 pm.
