Selle's PK Lifts Taylor Over Goshen in Double Overtime
UPLAND, Ind. - Senior Courtney Selle had gone her entire Taylor career without scoring a goal, until tonight. Her game-winning goal came with just over one minute remaining in the second overtime period to lift the Trojans to a 1-0 win over Goshen.
Taylor (6-5-1, 2-1) came out early and controlled the game from the start. TU kept the ball on Goshen's side of the field for the majority of the game, finishing with seven shots in the opening 45-minutes of play. The Trojans limited Goshen to just one shot during that time, but it was saved freshman goalie Lauren Engelkes.
Despite the strong offense, the Trojans were unable to score in the opening half of play and headed into the half tied at 0-0.
The second half of play was identical to the first. The Trojans, again, controlled the ball for the majority of the half and was able to out-shoot the Maple Leafs 13-0 in the second half. TU was also awarded nine corners in the second half alone, but were unable to capitalized on the opportunities, forcing overtime.
In the first overtime, The Trojans finished with five shots compared to Goshen's one. After a scoreless first overtime period, TU was given just 10 more minutes to find a game-winner.
In the second OT, Taylor continue to put the pressure on Goshen, attempting four shots and being awarded two corner kicks. The purple and gold, however, were unable to score on those attempts. The Trojans were awarded a penalty kick less than a minute into the second overtime, but junior Shelbi Lowe's PK attempt was blocked by Goshen keeper Natalie Thorne, who finished with 14 saves in the game.
On a Taylor offensive attack as time was winding down, Selle was tripped from behind in the penalty box with just over one minute remaining in the game. Having not scored a goal in her TU career, the South Carolina native calmly struck the ball and placed it just by Goshen's keeper on the left-hand side of the net to give Taylor the 1-0 win.
The Trojans finished the game with season highs in both shots (29) and corner kicks (14). While the offense led the way for TU in the win, the Trojan defense held its ground on Goshen attacks. The backline limited the Maple Leafs to two total shots in the game, both of which were saved by Engelkes.
The win moved Taylor's all-time record against Goshen to 22-2 and was the eighth consecutive win over the Maple Leafs.
Taylor will be back in action on Wednesday when the team travels to Marion to take on county-rival Indiana Wesleyan at 7:00 p.m.
