- Born in Kenya and orphaned at a very young age
- Was eventually lead to attend Taylor by Martin and Sue Moore, whom James met while attending Starehe School in Nairobi
- Received a remarkable 18 NAIA All-American honors
- Won eight national titles and set three national records
- Selected as the outstanding athlete of three NAIA National Championship meets
- Never lost a conference or NCCAA championship race during his four years
- A Wheeler Award winner, and three-year winner of the Gates-Howard Award
- Currently holds or has held numerous records in Taylor history
