UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor treated a large crowd to a pair of lopsided wins over cross-county rival, Indiana Wesleyan, on Friday night. TU never trailed in the doubleheader, winning 9-2 and 9-1 in the first-ever night games at Winterholter Field.
The Trojans made hard contact up and down the lineup all throughout the evening, sending nine of their 20 hits for extra bases. Danny Moorehead led the charge by blasting a pair of home runs deep into the night sky and beyond the leftfield fence, while Alex Senyshyn stroked two doubles and a triple, Nick Saldutti doubled and tripled and Jake West notched a pair of doubles.
Josh DeGraaf (6-2) and Luke Hunter (1-4) took care of the rest with a pair of complete game gems on the bump for the Purple and Gold. The duo held IWU to one extra-base hit and one walk over 14 innings of work, while striking out 13 Wildcats.
Taylor wasted no time setting the tone, batting around in the first inning of Friday's opening and scoring five times. TU added three more in the second for the 8-0 cushion and rolled to the 9-2 victory.
Senyshyn ended with three extra-base hits in three trips, drove in three and scored twice to lead the charge, with Saldutti going 2-3 with two RBI and West going 2-4 with three RBI and two runs scored.
DeGraaf worked around eight hits and a walk to notch his career-best seventh complete game of the season and improve to 27-10 over four seasons on the mound with TU.
Hunter was even better in the nightcap, striking out nine Wildcat batters without allowing an earned run. The sophomore notched his first win of the year, giving up five hits and not issuing a walk in his sixth collegiate complete game and third of the season.
With Hunter holding the IWU bats in check, Moorehead highlighted the offense with homers in the first and third innings to help Taylor jump to a 9-0 lead en route to the 9-1 victory. Moorehead ended 2-2 with a walk, four RBI, two runs and the two dingers. West and Saldutti picked up two more hits and Tanner Watson had two RBI and a run scored in the win.
Taylor (22-16, 9-9 CL) and Indiana Wesleyan (20-22, 10-10 CL) will square off again on Saturday in a 5:00 pm doubleheader. TU will have a brief pre-game ceremony starting at 4:40 pm to celebrate the new lights at Winterholter Field.
