Trojans Take Series Win Over Knights with Saturday Split
UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor dropped Saturday's opener, 5-1, before winning the second contest by a 5-2 margin at Winterholter Field to take three out of four from Marian in the first series of Crossroads League play.
After managing only two hits in Saturday's first game, Taylor broke loose for four runs in the first frame of the second affair, and led throughout during the 5-2 victory.
Tanner Watson led off the rally with a walk, before singles from Brian Moore and Nick Hollowell gave the Trojans a 1-0 edge. Moore scored on a passed ball and a two-run single by Nathan Targgart plated Hollowell and Jared Adkins for the 4-0 cushion.
Andrew Feldman, Rob Fox and Matt Patton made the early lead hold up, as Feldman fanned five and allowed only two runs over 4.2 innings to improve to 2-1. Fox followed by picking up four outs on 16 pitches and Patton earned his first save of the year with a perfect seventh.
Moore sparked the offense in the outing with three hits, a double, one steal and a run scored, while Hollowell and Targgart also hit safely and collected TU's only three RBI. Watson went hitless but walked and scored twice, while swiping a bag. Josh Lane turned in a strong defensive game at second base, picking up seven assists from the keystone and also stealing a base.
Marian's (9-16, 1-3 CL) Zeke Howie tossed a two-hitter in the opener, needing only 73 pitches and 90 minutes to secure the complete game win on the bump for the Knights.
Jake West doubled and scored, while Hollowell singled and stole a base for the only offensive highlights of the contest by the Trojans.
Logan Rodgers (4-1) pushed his scoreless innings streak to 22.1 frames before a two-out, two-strike wild pitch plated two Knights and broke a 0-0 tie in the fourth inning of game one. Rodgers notched a strikeout on the next pitch and took his first loss of the season after allowing the two runs on five hits and striking out five in four innings.
Taylor (16-8, 3-1 CL) will turn its attention to a six-game Spring Break trip through Georgia next week. TU will open the week with a doubleheader at Point (11-15) on Tuesday at 3:00 pm.
