SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Lincoln Reed smacked a grand slam to boost the Trojans to an 11-7 win against Spring Arbor on Tuesday, before TU fell by a 10-4 margin in the second contest.
The afternoon was marred by nine Taylor errors that led to 10 unearned runs being scored by the Cougars in the twin bill, including all seven tallies in the opener. The defensive struggles continued a recent downturn in the field for TU, with 30 errors over the past 13 games after making only 14 errors through the first 19 contests of the season.
The Taylor bats overcame the miscues in the opener, as TU jumped Spring Arbor for four runs in the top of the first and added four more in the fourth on Reed's slam. The Trojan offense went to work again in the sixth, with run-scoring singles by Nick Hollowell and Nathan Targgart to push the lead to 11-7.
Luke Hunter pitched well despite the shaky defense, holding the Cougars to three hits and zero earned runs in 4.1 innings to improve to 3-1 on the bump this season. The junior righty fanned nine batters without issuing a walk.
Matt Patton earned his second save of the season, pitching out of a jam in the fifth and cruising through the sixth and seventh frames to close the 11-7 victory. Patton held SAU without a run over the final 2.2 innings and notched a pair of strikeouts.
Taylor benefitted from 11 walks by SAU hurlers and added seven hits to score 11 times in the victory. Reed led the charge with two hits, five RBI and the grand slam, with Hollowell picking up two hits and scoring three times. Tanner Watson and Brian Moore each scored twice, as the top-four spots in TU's lineup went five-for-15 with 10 runs and six RBI.
Spring Arbor (8-12, 3-3 CL) jumped the Trojans for eight runs in the first two innings of the night cap and rolled to the 10-4 victory to salvage the split.
Jake West, Kevin Fahy and Moore each collected two hits, with Targgart driving in two in the loss.
Jamie Bristol pitched well in relief, holding SAU to zero earned run over 3.2 frames and Collin Eggleson worked a scoreless sixth.
Taylor (21-11, 4-2 CL) is scheduled to take on Spring Arbor again on Wednesday, with the doubleheader set for a 2:00 pm start in Michigan.
