UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor used four pitchers and limited Goshen to a single run on eight hits in Monday's doubleheader sweep at Winterholter Field. TU did not allow an extra-base hit and fanned 17 batters during the 3-1 and 12-0 victories.
Luke Hunter (4-1) highlighted the standout performances on the mound for Taylor, notching the win on the bump in game two by fanning nine Goshen batters in six shutout frames. Hunter allowed only two hits and issued three walks, before Jamie Bristol tossed a scoreless seventh to finish the contest.
The Trojans did not provide any run support for Hunter until the bottom half of the fourth inning, when they sent 13 men to the plate and scored seven times on eight hits. Brian Moore ignited the rally with a bunt single and a stolen base before scoring on a double by Lincoln Reed to give TU a 1-0 margin. Moore doubled off the left-center field fence in his second at bat of the inning, plating Jared Adkins for the seventh and final tally of the decisive outburst.
TU continued to pile on behind Hunter, adding a solo home run from Nick Hollowell in the fifth and four more scores in the sixth to complete the 12-0 rout.
Taylor rapped out six doubles and a homer in the 14-hit attack, getting two hits and one double each from Moore, Reed, Nathan Targgart, Hollowell, Nick Saldutti and Adkins.
The offense did not come nearly as abundantly in the opener, as Goshen and Taylor both ended with five hits in the 3-1 TU victory.
Tanner Watson collected two of TU's knocks, with Reed, Targgart and Kevin Fahy each adding one single. Fahy and Adkins drove home one run each and a Goshen throwing error plated a third run for the Purple and Gold.
Taylor struck first in the bottom of the third, as Fahy and Jake West walked to open the frame. Fahy later scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Adkins, before a single and error plated West for a 2-0 lead.
Logan Rodgers and Matt Patton protected the lead throughout, with Rodgers carrying a shutout into the fifth to improve to 6-3 and Patton earning his third save.
Goshen (13-25, 5-7 CL) threatened in the fifth with three-straight singles to crack the score column and end the evening for Rodgers. Patton entered with two runners on and escaped without allowing any additional damage.
Patton cut through the CG lineup, registering the final nine outs without allowing a hit or a walk and needing only 34 pitches to close out the final three innings.
Taylor (24-12, 7-3 CL) will return to action this weekend, when it hosts Mount Vernon Nazarene (17-12, 3-3 CL) for four games on Friday and Saturday. The key Crossroads League series at Winterholter Field is set to begin on Friday at 5:00 pm.
