UPLAND, Ind. – Taylor scored a pair of key Crossroads League victories over Mount Vernon Nazarene on Friday night at Winterholter Field, edging the Cougars, 2-1, in 10 innings in the opener and 5-2 in the nightcap.
TU scraped out the two wins against two of the best arms in the league, as MVNU's Lucas Daugherty and Roberto Cediel entered Friday's action with a combined earned-run average of 1.10 in just under 90 innings this season. The duo ranked first and third in the CL in individual ERA and MVNU had won 12-of-15 games in which one or both had pitched this season.
The Trojans were up to the task, playing clean defense behind outstanding pitching from Jordan Crabb and Matt Patton in the doubleheader and getting clutch hits throughout the evening.
The first blow came in the bottom of the ninth inning of Friday's first game when Brian Moore sent a Daugherty offering over the left field fence to knot the score at 1-1. Nathan Targgart then doubled to open the 10th, and pinch runner Riley Reimschisel came around with the winning run after Sam Wiese bunted him to third and Jake West lifted a walk-off sacrifice fly into left-center field for the thrilling win.
Taylor rode the wave of momentum into the nightcap and jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-out double off the wall by Lincoln Reed that was followed by a two-run blast to left by Nick Hollowell.
The lead grew to 3-0 in the third on another Reed double and a two-out, two-run single past the shortstop by Hollowell plated Josh Lane and Tanner Watson to give TU a 5-2 lead in the fifth.
Patton (2-1) made the lead stick, finishing the gem on only 79 pitches for the first complete game and longest outing of his collegiate career. Patton ended with five strikeouts and eight ground-ball outs without issuing a walk and now boasts a 1.07 ERA, 0.79 WHIP, .194 average against and a 26-to-two strikeout-to-walk ratio over 25.1 innings of work with two wins and three saves since March 12.
Crabb was equally as impressive in the first game, carrying a shutout in the eighth, before ending with no runs allowed on just four hits in 7.1 innings of work. The southpaw was followed to the bump by Rob Fox and Colin Eggleson, before Logan Rodgers (7-3) tossed a perfect 10th to record the win.
Hollowell led the offense with three hits, a home run and four runs batted in during the two games, with Moore also going yard, stealing a base, scoring twice and racking up 12 assists with sparkling defense at the shortstop position. Reed collected two doubles and Josh Lane singled twice in his only two at bats and scored once.
Taylor (26-12, 9-3 CL) and Mount Vernon Nazarene (19-14, 3-5 CL) will square off for two more games at Winterholter on Saturday afternoon, with the first game set to begin at 1:00 pm.
