FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Taylor entered play on Tuesday with a chance to clinch the 20th league title in program history but had its offense stymied by a Saint Francis duo that limited the Trojans to four hits over 14 innings in a 2-0 and 1-0 sweep.
Taylor was shutout in back-to-back games for the first time since May 10, 2006, when it was blanked twice and eliminated from the NAIA Regionals. The losses snapped an 11-game win streak for TU and narrowed its lead atop the Crossroads League standings to three games over Bethel and four over Mount Vernon Nazarene with six games remaining in the regular season.
Along with snapping TU's 11-game win streak, Saint Francis (14-34, 8-14 CL) also broke out of a seven-game losing skid with the complete game gems by Nathan Coakley and Jake Garrett. The duo racked up 15 strikeouts and only allowed five Trojans to reach scoring position.
The Trojans also pitched it well, with Matt Patton holding the Cougars to one earned run over six innings in the game-one loss, before Jamie Bristol and Logan Rodgers combined to limit USF to a single tally in the game-two defeat.
Taylor (33-14, 15-5 CL) will look to get back on track when it hosts Grace (19-23, 6-14 CL) on Thursday for a doubleheader starting at 5:00 pm. TU can clinch the regular season Crossroads League Championship with three more victories, or a pair of wins and one loss by Bethel and Mount Vernon Nazarene.
