HUNTINGTON, Ind. – Less than 24 hours after securing the 2016 Crossroads League Championship, Taylor returned to action at Huntington for the regular season finale on Tuesday night. TU took the opener, 4-3, but fell in the second game by a 4-1 margin.
Taylor moved to within one win of tying the program record for victories in a single season and to within five wins of the 400th head coaching triumph for 12th-year head coach Kyle Gould in the opener.
Luke Hunter pitched his fourth complete game of the season to improve to 8-1 on the hill by holding Huntington to three runs on four hits and striking out seven. Hunter finished the regular season 7-0 with three complete games in seven league starts, posting a 1.49 earned-run average with 53 strikeouts over 42.1 dominant innings of work against Crossroads League hitters.
TU opened the scoring behind Hunter with a two-out single by Tanner Watson in the third and pushed the lead to 2-0 on a Lincoln Reed dinger in the fourth. The lead doubled to 4-0 in the fifth, when Josh Lane and Brian Moore led off with singles and later scored on a two-run double by Nathan Targgart.
Huntington (19-26, 14-10) made things interesting with three runs in the sixth, but Hunter escaped with the lead and set the Foresters down in order in the seventh to secure the win.
Six different Trojans had one hit in the contest, with Reed, Targgart and Watson delivering the key run-scoring knocks.
Game two started with a two-run bottom of the first for the hosts and HU held on for the 4-1 victory to secure the split.
Brian Moore and Sam Wiese each had two hits in the game, with Moore doubling for TU's lone extra-base hit of the nightcap.
Taylor (37-16, 19-7 CL) will turn its focus to fighting for its fourth Crossroads League Tournament Championship under Gould's guidance when it opens tournament play on Saturday at 3:00 pm. The top-seeded Trojans will host No. 8-seeded Saint Francis (16-36, 10-16 CL) in a single nine-inning game in the first round of the Crossroads League Tournament.
