EMERSON, Ga. – An early lead was not enough for the Trojans on Saturday, as the RV TU squad (7-6) finished off its series with No. 17 Reinhardt (4-3) with a 6-4 loss. The hosting Eagles overcame a three-run deficit to sweep Taylor on the weekend.
A one-out two-run double from Matt Dutkowski gave the Purple and Gold a strong start in the afternoon competition. The extra-base hit brought home Nick Rusche and TJ Bass, giving TU a 2-0 edge in the top of the first inning.
Taylor extended its lead in the second, taking advantage of a leadoff single by Conner Crawford. The sophomore nabbed his second steal of the season to move into scoring position. Jonathan Foster picked up the RBI, bringing home Crawford with a sacrifice fly.
The Eagles bounced back with a huge two-out rally in the fifth inning. Three walks and two hit by pitches plagued the Trojans in the frame, as the host squad jumped ahead, 4-3.
The TU offense returned to its scoring ways in the seventh inning, as Joe Moran and Bass posted back-to-back hits. Bass notched a double to put runners on second and third, setting up Dutkowski for his third RBI of the game.
Two unearned runs sunk the Trojans in the bottom of the seventh, as RU retook control of the game. A pair of runs for the host squad was enough to seal the 6-4 final.
Bass notched his fifth multi-hit effort on Saturday, going two-for-three at the plate. The outfielder also improved his hitting streak to four games with the nice outing.
RV Taylor is scheduled to return to action in a three-game home series against Judson, beginning with its home opener on Friday at 3:00 pm.
