Video Highlights | Jacob Morris Outfield Assist | TJ Bass Walk-Off Single
UPLAND, Ind. – One day after leaning on its pitchers for a doubleheader sweep of No. 12 Indiana Tech, RV Taylor showed off its deep offensive lineup on Saturday, piling up 17 runs in two more wins to complete a four-game weekend sweep of the Warriors at Winterholter Field.
The Trojans powered up for 15 extra-base hits on the day, hitting .365 and posting a team slugging percentage of .714 in the two victories, using their power to secure 4-3 and 13-1 wins on the home turf.
TU and Indiana Tech turned in a classic in the opener, with both teams scoring one run in the first and fourth innings. A Conner Crawford triple in the seventh led to the third tie of the game at 3-3.
The two sides remained locked at 3-3 entering the bottom of the ninth, when Crawford delivered again with a leadoff double. The Trojans loaded the bases with an intentional walk and hit batter, before TJ Bass roped a walk-off single to finish off the 4-3 Taylor win in thrilling fashion.
Kade Vander Molen, Jacob Morris and Crawford all had a double among two hits in the win, with Ben Kalbaugh adding a double and Joe Moran crushing his second home run of the year.
Luke Carlson (1-1) notched the win in relief, working the final 2.2 innings without allowing a run on the bump for TU.
After delivering the game-winner in the opener, Bass stayed locked in at the plate, mashing two no-doubt home runs in the nightcap. Bass added three walks and a trio of runs batted in to highlight Taylor's 13-1 rout that featured nine extra-base hits from the Purple and Gold.
Vander Molen capped his strong weekend series with four runs batted in, with Crawford doubling twice and driving in three. The duo finished the doubleheader seven-of-12 with five doubles and one triple combined.
Moran stayed hot at the plate as well, posting a pair of doubles, while Matt Dutkowski and Brett Lawson also had multi-hit games.
Luke Shively took the start on the mound and moved to 2-0 on the season after allowing one earned run in 4.2 innings. Shively fanned five, before handing the ball over to Sam Shively and Drew Henrickson for the final seven outs.
Taylor outscored the No. 12 Indiana Tech club by a 27-6 margin in the four-game sweep, piling up a 19-5 advantage in extra-base hits and posting a team slash line of .314/.432/.551/.983.
The Trojan pitchers were dominant throughout, posting a 1.41 earned-run average with a .200 average against and 1.09 WHIP over the four contests.
RV Taylor (11-6) will look to stay hot when it opens Crossroads League play against Goshen (0-2) on March 4 and 6. The Trojans and Maple Leafs are slated to play 1:00 pm doubleheaders both days at Winterholter Field.
