HUNTINGTON, Ind. – In its third extra-inning affair of the season, No. 20 Taylor (24-6, 13-0 CL) recorded its second victory, running its win streak to 17 games with a 4-3 triumph over RV Huntington (15-6, 8-5 CL) in 11 innings.
TJ Bass put together another efficient performance at the plate for TU, finishing 3-for-4 to go along with a pair of walks, while Brett Lawson did a plethora of damage in the nine hole, recording three hits and driving in three runs. Camden Knepp hit a clutch two-run single in the top of the 11th inning, while Kade Vander Molen, Joe Moran, Ben Kalbaugh, and Matt Dutkowski each added one hit apiece.
Taylor struck first in the top of the second inning, as a Lawson RBI single scored Jacob Morris and gave the Trojans a 1-0 lead. Lawson provided more offense in the fourth, crushing a two-out, two-run double to deep center field, scoring Kalbaugh and Dutkowski for the 3-0 Taylor advantage.
Huntington, however, did not go away quietly, scoring twice in the bottom half of the fourth to trim the Taylor lead to a single run.
The Trojan bats fell silent over the next five innings, recording just three hits and leaving six runners on base, and the Foresters took advantage, scoring the game-tying run in the bottom of the eighth to send the contest to extra innings.
Taylor got back on track offensively in the top of the 11th, scoring four runs on three hits and one error. Lawson started the rally with a single, and Nick Rusche reached base on a misplayed grounder by the Foresters. Vander Molen followed with an RBI double, scoring Lawson, before a bases loaded walk to Conner Crawford plated Rusche. Knepp capped off the scoring with his two-out, two-run single, giving the Trojans a 7-3 lead.
The Foresters made the game interesting in the bottom half of the frame, scoring three runs on a walk and a pair of sacrifice flies, but a game-ending, 9-6-3 double play courtesy of Crawford, Rusche, and Dutkowski thwarted Huntington's comeback bid.
Luke Carlson (3-1) recorded his third victory of the season in relief, while Moran put together a quality start, striking out seven in 6.1 efficient frames. Tucker Waddups collected his third save of the season, inducing the flyout that led to Taylor's game-ending double play.
Game two of the doubleheader was called due to inclement weather with Taylor trailing 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning. The game was resumed on Monday, March 29, with Huntington holding on for a 5-2 victory. The loss was TU's first league defeat of the season after opening with 13-straight CL victories.
