UPLAND, Ind. – Ben Kalbaugh swatted a home run in both ends of Friday's doubleheader sweep over Spring Arbor, highlighting Taylor's 7-2 win in the opener and delivering the only Taylor hit and run of the nightcap in a 1-0 victory.
The Trojans had 10 hits in the opener and pushed runs across in the second, third, fourth and fifth innings to take control in the 7-2 win. Kade Vander Molen joined Ben Kalbaugh in leaving the yard for the big blows, with Nick Rusche and Joe Moran collecting two hits each at the top of the lineup and Kalbaugh and Jonathan Foster also getting two hits each in the lineup's last two slots.
Moran (7-3) took care of the rest on the mound for TU, matching a season-high with 11 strikeouts over 7.2 brisk innings to earn the win.
Kalbaugh's second-inning home run was Taylor's only knock of the game in the nightcap and held up behind the pitching of Noah Huseman and Mitch Ubelhor in the 1-0 victory.
Huseman (7-1) worked 5.2 innings to earn the win, pitching around seven Spring Arbor hits before Ubelhor picked up the final four outs for his fourth save of the season.
SAU's best chance came after it put its first two hitters on in the fifth, but the Taylor defense came through to keep the Cougars off the scoreboard. TU spoiled a sacrifice bunt attempt by getting the force out at third, then garnered a second-straight out at the hot corner with a caught stealing, before Brett Lawson speared a hard hit grounder and fired across the diamond for the final out of the frame.
No. 21 Taylor (31-12, 20-6 CL) and Spring Arbor (18-20, 12-14 CL) are set to round out their weekend series on Saturday, with first pitch set for noon at Winterholter Field.
