MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – After No. 25 Taylor established a two-game lead over Mount Vernon Nazarene in the Crossroads League standings on Friday, the Cougars (27-14, 20-8 CL) turned the tables on Taylor by taking two on Saturday.
The Trojan offense produced just five runs throughout the day, after having posted 26 total runs in Friday's doubleheader. Meanwhile, the Cougar offense unleashed an offensive attack of its own on Saturday, scoring 20 total runs, 14 of which came in game two.
The Cougars took game one by a final score of 6-4 while withstanding a late-game comeback bid offered by the Trojans.
Mount Vernon Nazarene scored the first four runs of the game, which bolstered a 5-1 lead heading into the seventh inning. At that point, however, Taylor plated the game's next three runs and cut the Cougar-lead to one.
One of those three runs was produced by a bases-loaded TJ Bass walk, granting the junior his league-leading 67th RBI of the season, a mark that now sits second in the entire nation.
The late-game offense proved too-little-too-late, however, as Mount Vernon Nazarene posted another run in the bottom half of the eighth en route to a 6-4 win.
The Cougars, then, took game two by an unsettling score of 14-1, securing the day-two sweep of the Trojans and placing themselves back alongside Taylor at the top of the league's standings.
No. 25 Taylor (30-14, 20-8 CL) is set to return to action for another significant series on Friday, April 22nd, at 3:00pm, when the Trojans play host to cross-county rival Indiana Wesleyan (25-18, 18-10 CL), who sits just two games back of Taylor in the league-standings.
