Trojans Win Rain-Shortened Huntington Invitational
PERU, Ind. – The Taylor men's golf team claimed its second tournament title of the 2014-15 season with a victory at the Huntington Invitational which was shorted to a single round due to Saturday's inclement weather.
Freshman Nick Waskom claimed his the first tournament victory of his career with a 2-under par round of 70 on the 6,797-yard, par-72 layout at Rock Hollow Golf Club in Peru, Ind.
The Trojans placed a total of four player in the top-10 of the 74-player field as Waskom was joined by fellow freshman Mitch Lamping who shot 74 (+2) to finish in a tie for fourth while sophomores Seth Neal and Nathan Edwards, who competed on Taylor's B-team, carded rounds of 76 to finish tied for eighth place.
In addition to the stellar play from Waskom and Lamping the Taylor A-team also counted a 77 from senior Nate Scheibe and a 78 from freshman Trey Turner for a team score of 299 during Friday's action. Stefan Fahlen was the TU drop score with an 82.
Taylor's B team also played well, counting a 79 by sophomore Jordan Hall and an 80 from senior Tucker Fahlen in addition to the pair of 76's from Neal and Edwards. Senior Grant Hall's 82 was the drop score for the second squad.
The Trojans took the tournament title in the 13-team field with a score of 299 (+11). Saint Francis (305) finished second while Indiana Wesleyan (309) and Bethel (310) finished third and fourth. Taylor's B team carded a team score of 311 to finish fifth, ahead of Crossroads League foes Mount Vernon Nazarene, Huntington, and Grace.
Taylor will wrap up the regular season on Monday with a one-day 36-hole tournament hosted by Indiana Wesleyan at Meshingomesia Country Club in Marion, Ind. Action is scheduled to begin with a 9:00 am shotgun start.
