UPLAND, Ind. – The Taylor men's soccer team (3-5-0) netted a season-high three goals in a shutout win over Lourdes (0-3-3) Tuesday night in front of TU's home crowd.
The Trojans struck first midway through the first half when a loose ball in front of the net was collected by Bryce Lawrence and booted in for the goal. The eventual game-winning goal marked the first score and points in Lawrence's career.
Seven minutes later, a foul on the Gray Wolves in the box set up a penalty kick for Justin Devlin, who nailed the shot. The transfer's score was his first as a Trojan, and it brought his season points total to four.
For as impressive of a first half TU's attacking group played, the defense was just as stellar. While the Gray Wolves were able to spark up activity in the Trojans' end of the field, Taylor limited Lourdes to just one first-half shot, which came in the 38th minute and was saved by Sam Spiegel.
TU got off to a strong start again in the second half, when Brock Carpenter snuck a goal in past the diving Lourdes goalkeeper to push the lead to 3-0. Collin Maris recorded the assist on the play, as his strong throw-in was deflected off a Gray Wolves' defender toward the waiting feet of Carpenter. Maris' assist was his first of the season and fourth of the junior's career.
The Gray Wolves were able to make more noise offensively throughout the remainder of the match, but they never found the back of the net as Spiegel posted a clean sheet, making two saves.
The Trojans owned advantages in both shots (11-7) and shots on goal (5-2) on the night.
Taylor kicks off Crossroads League play on Saturday, Sept. 23, at home against Saint Francis (6-2-0). The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m. at Turner Stadium.
