WINONA LAKE, Ind. – The Taylor men's soccer team (3-6-1, 0-1-1 CL) hung with No. 4 Grace (8-2-0, 2-0-0) through much of the night Wednesday, but ultimately fell 3-1 on the road in Winona Lake, Ind.
The Lancers demonstrated why they rank so highly in the polls early in the match, as they got out to a 2-0 lead with back-to-back strikes less than 10 minutes in.
In the midst of a 21-minute stretch where the Trojans controlled possession and GC did not get a single shot off, Matt Harrold's header brought TU within a goal in the 31st minute. Freshmen Justin Devlin and Matt Yoder were both credited with an assist on the play, as Harrold notched his first goal of the season.
Taylor's impressive stretch of play against the Lancers led to TU trailing by just one in the shots department at halftime, 7-6, while it held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Trojans were on the defensive throughout most of the second half, and No. 4 Grace pulled ahead by two with a breakaway goal in the 73rd minute. TU was able to fire off three shots in the final six minutes of game time, but it was not enough.
Sam Spiegel made four saves on the night, while Yoder put together another impressive performance on the offensive end with two shots on goal to go along with his assist.
Taylor hosts Marian (6-1-2, 1-1-0) on Saturday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. for the Trojans' Senior Day.
