Trojans Fall at Huntington
HUNTINGTON, Ind. - Turnovers and poor shooting proved too much for the Taylor women's basketball team to overcome in a 59-43 loss at Huntington in Crossroads League action Saturday afternoon.
The Trojans (5-11, 0-4) jumped out to a 10-6 lead in the opening minutes of the game as senior forward Becca Daniels went to work on the low block with a pair of baskets but the Foresters used a 7-0 run to take a 15-12 lead at the 7:42 mark of the first half. The Trojans responded with back-to-back baskets to briefly reclaim the lead but an HU bucket at the 5:32 mark gave the Foresters the lead for good as Huntington built a 25-21 halftime advantage.
Huntington (12-3, 4-0) opened the second stanza with a 10-4 run to push its lead to 35-25 before TU's Taylor Degenkolb knocked down a 3-pointer to spark a 10-4 Trojan run as Taylor sliced the Huntington lead to 39-35 with 12 minutes remaining. However, the Foresters closed the game on a 14-3 run to pull away for the victory.
Taylor committed 24 turnovers while Huntington suffered just nine miscues and the Trojans struggled to find their shooting touch, connecting on just 36 percent (18-50) of its attempts from the field, including just 2-for-12 from beyond the arc.
Daniels paced the Trojans with a team-high 13 points and seven rebounds but the senior frontcourt trio of Ashley Fouch, Kelsey Bryant, and Kelci Freds combined for just nine points for the Trojans although Freds continued her streak of hitting a 3-pointer in every game this season as the Warsaw, Ind., native finished 1-for-5 from beyond the arc.
The Trojans are in action again on Wednesday when Taylor travels to Mount Vernon Nazarene for a Crossroads League contest with tip scheduled for 7:00 pm.
