TU Picks Up Road Win at Goshen
GOSHEN, Ind. - Monica Compton had 19 points off the bench to help fuel a road league win for Taylor, as the Trojans held off a late Goshen rally for an 80-71 victory on Saturday.
Taylor connected on 19-of-30 attempts from the field in the second half and shot 51.6 percent as a team for the game, while placing a trio of players in double figures in the scoring column.
Compton paced the team with 19 points on nine-of-14 shooting during 22 minutes of work, while Kelsey Bryant ended with 18 points and Becca Daniels turned in 14.
With the 18 points, Bryant moved to within 37 of becoming the 21st player in program history to join Taylor's 1,000-point club.
The Trojans used a 19-3 stretch midway through the first half to take control of the game, turning a 12-7 deficit into a 26-15 lead that they would never relinquish.
The rally started with 11-straight points for TU, as Taylor Degenkolb ignited the surge with a free throw and a three-point play, which was followed by hoops from Daniels, Kelci Freds and Compton.
Goshen would not get closer than six points for the rest of the half and did not seriously threaten TU's lead until drawing to within three points at 40-37 and again at 42-39.
Bryant and Shayna Wood turned the Maple Leafs away with back-to-back hoops, before another basket from Wood pushed Taylor's lead back to double figures at 54-44 with 12:34 to play.
Goshen (4-16, 1-7 CL) would make one final push in the closing minutes to get to within 75-69 with 1:09 left in the game, but Taylor held on for the 80-71 win.
Taylor (8-12, 3-5 CL) will be back in action on Wednesday, when it hosts Bethel in a 7:00 pm start inside Odle Arena.
