Trojans Pull Away from Goshen
UPLAND, Ind. - Kelci Freds scored 18 points and the Taylor women's basketball team hit ten 3-pointers as the Trojans pulled away from Goshen for an 82-63 victory in Odle Arena on Saturday afternoon.
Freds led four Trojans in double figures as senior Becca Daniels and sophomore Monica Compton added 14 points each and senior Kelsey Bryant chipped in 13 as the Trojans won their seventh consecutive game over Goshen.
Taylor (11-17, 6-10) got off to a hot start when Bryant knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers in the opening minutes and the Trojans jumped out to a 6-2 advantage. After the Maple Leafs pulled even at 8-8 Bryant added another triple and Shayna Wood connected on shot in the lane as the Trojans reclaimed the lead a 13-8 and never allowed Goshen to draw closer than two for the remainder of the half en route to a 43-33 halftime advantage.
The Trojans pushed the lead to 50-38 with 14:32 to play in the second half but the Maple Leafs lowly chipped away at the lead, eventually trimming the TU advantage to 50-44 when the Leafs' Sophie Sears converted a shot in the lane with just under 12 minutes to play. First-year TU coach Kelly Packard called on her senior backcourt to stop the Goshen run as Bryant drew a foul and added two free throws before Freds added a 16-foot jumper followed by her fourth 3-pointer of the game as the Trojans reclaimed a comfortable cushion with a 57-44 lead.
Taylor finished the game 24-for-54 (44.4 percent) from the floor, including a 10-for-22 (45.5 percent) performance from 3-point range. Taylor also won the battle on the glass, outrebounding the Maple Leafs 36-30. Sophomore point guard Emma Brattain dished out a team-high six assists as the Trojans recorded 22 assists and just ten turnovers, their second lowest turnover total of the season.
Goshen (4-23, 1-14) shot 48.0 percent (24-50) from the floor, including 4-for-11 (36.4 percent) from beyond the arc but committed 16 turnovers and hit just 11-of-25 (44.0 percent) from the foul line. Sophomore Tyra Carver paced the Maple Leafs with 19 points and freshman Sophia Sears added 13 points.
Taylor will wrap up the regular season next week as the Trojans travel to Bethel on Tuesday night before returning home for the final game of the regular season next Saturday when No. 21 Huntington visits Odle Arena.
