No. 20 Huntington Defeats Trojans on Senior Day
UPLAND, Ind. - Kelsey Bryant scored 17 points and pulled down nine rebounds on senior day for the Taylor women's basketball team but No. 20 Huntington put a damper on the celebration with a 59-50 victory over the Trojans.
The Foresters (22-7, 14-4) jumped out to a 25-12 lead with 5:33 remaining in the opening stanza before the Taylor offense came to life. Senior forward Shayna Wood converted a 3-point play to spark a 12-0 TU run over the final minutes of the first half as Taylor headed to halftime trailing 25-24.
Bryant scored on the opening possession of the second half to give Taylor its first lead of the game at 26-25 and fellow senior Becca Daniels converted in the lane on the next possession as the Trojans pushed their lead to 28-25. After trading baskets, Huntington's Pazia Speed knocked down a 3-pointer to tie the game at 30-30 and spark a 7-0 spurt for the Foresters as Huntington pushed its lead to 34-30 with 15 minutes to play.
Taylor (12-18, 7-11) clawed its way back to a 40-39 deficit with 8:55 to play but the Foresters scored seven straight points to push the lead to 47-39 and Huntington never allowed Taylor to draw closer than six over the final seven minutes as the Foresters secured the season sweep.
The Trojans struggled from the floor, finishing 18-for-57 (31.6 percent) from the field, including 2-for-14 (14.3 percent) from 3-point range while Huntington finished 21-for-49 (42.9 percent) from the floor and 3-of-10 (30.0 percent) from beyond the arc. The Trojans managed a 41-29 rebounding edge but Huntington outscored Taylor 45-39 in the paint.
Turnovers proved to be costly for the Trojans down the stretch as Huntington turned 17 Taylor miscues into 21 points while Taylor scored just six points off 11 Forester turnovers.
Senior Shayna Wood tied her season high with nine points and added five rebounds while sophomore Monica Compton added nine points and senior Becca Daniels added seven to pace TU.
Huntington's Amelia Recker led the Foresters with 13 points and ten rebounds and HU got 14 from Miranda Palmer and 12 from Pazia Speed.
With the loss Taylor ends sixth place in the Crossroads League standings and will travel to third-seeded and No. 10 Indiana Wesleyan (24-6, 14-4 CL) on Tuesday night for a Crossroads League Tournament Quarterfinal clash between the rival programs.
