Taylor Falls in Crossroads League Quarterfinals
Video Highlights
MARION, Ind. - The Taylor women's basketball team saw its season come to a close on Tuesday night inside Indiana Wesleyan's Luckey Arena, as the Trojans suffered a 59-37 defeat to the tenth-ranked Wildcats in the opening round of the Crossroads League Tournament.
Sixth-seeded Taylor struggled all night against the nation's top-rated defensive unit, setting season-lows with 37 points and a 24.5-percent shooting performance from the floor. TU was also haunted by 19 turnovers in the contest.
The Trojans opened the game with only one make in 10 attempts, in addition to missing their first four free throws. The cold start put TU in an early deficit that it could never overcome, as IWU's Teniel Krebs sank a triple from each corner to spur a 10-2 Wildcat lead.
Taylor would find its range on two of its next three attempts to draw within 12-6 midway through the opening half, but IWU opened up a double-digit lead on another triple from Krebs with 6:31 to play in the stanza and took a 27-15 lead to the break.
Third-seeded Indiana Wesleyan (25-6) would then put the game away in the second half, opening on a 6-1 stretch for a 33-16 advantage and never letting Taylor within single digits for the duration of the period.
Shayna Wood and Becca Daniels led Taylor with seven points each, while Monica Compton and Kelsey Bryant ended with six.
Taylor Goshert paced the Wildcats with 20 points, eight rebounds and three steals, while Katrina Blackmon pulled down 13 rebounds and Krebs ended with nine points.
The loss marked the final collegiate game in the careers of Ashley Fouch, Kelci Freds, Kelsey Bryant, Becca Daniels, Shayna Wood and Linden Daiss, as Taylor ended the 2013-2014 campaign with a 12-19 overall record and a sixth-place finish in the Crossroads League.
