HARTFORD CITY, Ind. – Freshman Cassidy Wyse of Taylor women's basketball was named All-Crossroads League Honorable Mention and Freshman of the Year Monday, as announced by the league office. Wyse also was named to the All-Freshman Team along with guard Josie Cobb.
Headed into a matchup with Marian in the Crossroads League Tournament Quarterfinals, Wyse is leading Taylor in game averages for scoring (13.1 points), assists (2.8) and steals (1.7), displaying an all-around game as a key piece to Taylor's success on both ends of the court. The forward from Archbold, Ohio and Archbold High School is also second on the team in rebounding, controlling 6.7 rebounds a game.
Wyse is tenth in the Crossroads League in both scoring and rebounding and is shooting 49.5 percent from the floor in her first collegiate season, which ranks third in the Crossroads League and 30th in NAIA Division II. Wyse's energy and skillset has allowed her to record five double-doubles on the season, which places her ninth in the Crossroads League for that category. Her current career-high scoring mark was set in just her third game of the season in the 73-66 victory over the University of Saint Francis (Ill.), netting 30 points on 12-of-14 shooting from the floor. Wyse also corralled a career-high 15 rebounds and snatched a career-high six steals in the road victory over Spring Arbor on January 10.
In addition to being named All-Crossroads League Honorable Mention and the Freshman of the Year in the Crossroads League, Wyse is one of three Trojans to earn Crossroads League Player of the Week honors throughout the season along with Megan Richardson and Jackie Osenbaugh. Wyse earned the distinction following her efforts in consecutive wins over Mount Vernon Nazarene and Spring Arbor (Jan. 5-11).
Cobb joins Wyse on the Crossroads League All-Freshmen Team as two of just six freshmen in the league to earn the distinction.
Cobb is from New Holland, Ohio and Miami Trace High School and has started in all 30 games to this point in the season for Taylor, leading the team in minutes played at 31.2 minutes per game. Cobb has shouldered the majority of the ball-handling duties for the Trojans and has proven to be one of Taylor's most dangerous threats from the perimeter, shooting 31.8 percent from deep and knocking in 41 attempts thus far from beyond the arc, tied for eighth most amongst all Crossroads League players. Cobb has also drained three or more three-pointers in five games in her first collegiate season.
On the year Cobb is Taylor's fourth-leading scorer at 8.4 points-per-game, also contributing 3 rebounds and 2.2 assists a contest. Her current career-high in scoring came with an 18 point outburst against Mount Vernon Nazarene on January 7. Cobb narrowly missed a double-double with 14 points and a career-high nine rebounds in the road win over Wilberforce on November 18.
Cobb and Wyse have helped Taylor earn four more victories than last season, which was the first season at Taylor for head coach Kelly Packard.
Taylor (16-14, 9-9 CL) is the No. 7 seed for the Crossroads League Tournament, which begins for the Trojans tomorrow against the No. 2 seed Marian in Indianapolis. The game will tip at 7:00 pm.
