Kelly Scores Career-High as Taylor Falls to Cumberland
HENDERSON, Tenn. – The Taylor Trojans wrapped up play at the Freed-Hardeman Classic with a 72-53 defeat against Cumberland (2-1) Saturday afternoon.
TU scored first on a layup from Ava Henson, but found itself down 14-5 just five minutes in. Taylor then went on a 15-2 run over the next six-plus minutes with big contributions from Quinn Kelly and Claycee West to take a 20-16 lead early in the second quarter. The teams then traded buckets for a few minutes before the Phoenix closed the period on a 6-0 run to take a 38-31 lead at the half.
West picked up where she left off in the first half with a three-pointer to cut the Trojan deficit to five at 39-34, but that was as close as it got in the second half as Cumberland continued its efficient shooting night to grab the win.
Kelly finished the night with a team-high and career-high 15 points, and West added 13 points to go along with a game-high three treys. Jillian Osswald aided TU's offensive effort with five assists.
Hot shooting from the Phoenix was the theme of the game, as they made 49.2 percent of their field goals and went 6-11 from deep.
Taylor (3-2) continues non-league play on Friday, Nov. 10 when it travels to No. 9 Rio Grande-Ohio (0-0) to open the Bevo Francis Invitational. Opening tip is scheduled for 6 p.m.
