Women's Soccer Draws with Aquinas
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Taylor women's soccer team moved to 2-2-1 on the year after a 1-1 draw with Aquinas Wednesday evening.
"Both ourselves and Aquinas are good teams and I thought both of us played really well," stated head coach Scott Stan. "We regrouped ourselves at halftime and had a few early chances in the second half, but couldn't find the net."
Despite five shot attempts and earning three corner kicks in the first half, the Trojans were unable to score in the opening 45 minutes of play. Aquinas, too, went scoreless in the first half after finishing with four shots, none of which were on goal.
After 33 scoreless minutes in the second half, the Saints capitalized on a free kick to strike first. Aquinas' Casey Westveer found the back of the net on a free kick from 19 yards out to give Aquinas a 1-0 lead with just 11 minutes remaining.
The Trojans would waste no time tying the game back up. Five minutes following Westveer's goal, sophomore Nikki Zaino gave a lead pass to junior Shelbi Lowe who would record her second goal of the season and tie the game up at 1-1.
In the two 10-minute overtime periods, neither team was able to capitalize on their shot opportunities. TU was limited to only one shot in the extra 20 minutes, while Aquinas shot the ball seven times, with just two of those shots on goal.
Junior goalie Anna Miller finished with four saves in the game, two of which came in the overtime periods.
The Trojans will have a day off before taking on Indiana Tech on Friday, September 11th inside Turner Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
