Yescott's Two Goals Lifts Taylor Over Bethel
UPLAND, Ind. - Entering Saturday's Crossroads League opener against Bethel, sophomore Hadlee Yescott had recorded two goals on the season. Following the game, she had added two more, as her goals lifted Taylor to a 3-2 win over Bethel.
Taylor, who claimed its sixth-straight win over the Pilots, struck first in the 10th-minute. Despite being second on the team in shots this season, sophomore Megan Kammer scored her first goal of the season off an assist from fellow sophomore Nikki Zaino to give TU the early 1-0 lead.
Taylor held Bethel in check the remainder of the half, limiting the Pilots to just one shot in the opening 45-miuntes. Taylor would go scoreless over the next 35-minutes of play as well, but held on to the 1-0 lead at the half.
It took the Trojans only two minutes into the second half to strike again. Yescott took a pass from junior Shelbi Lowe and found the back of the net in the 47th-minute to move Taylor's lead to 2-0.
Just three minutes later, Yescott was at it again, as the Scarborough, Maine native scored off another assist from Lowe to increase the Taylor lead to 3-0.
Just as the game seemed out of reach, Bethel made things interesting, scoring two goals in seven minutes. The Pilots first goal came in the 56th-minute, while the second one came in the 63rd-minute and made the score 3-2.
Following the Pilots' second goal, the Trojans' defense cracked down, allowing only one shot in the final 26-minutes of the game.
Although TU won by just one, the Trojans dominated on the offensive end. Taylor out-shot Bethel 17-6 in the game and earned two more corner kicks. Of the Pilots' six shots, freshman Lauren Engelkes saved three of them while playing in net for the Trojans in the second half. Junior Anna Miller got the start in goal, and was awarded the win while allowing no goals.
Yescott accounted for six of TU's 17 shots on the night, with five of them coming on goal. Lowe and Kammer were among five Trojans who finished the game with at least two shots.
TU will look to improve its Crossroads League record to 2-0 on Tuesday when the teams travels to Indianapolis to take on RV Marian at 7:00 p.m.
