Four Goals Not Enough to Knock off No. 7 Spring Arbor
UPLAND, Ind. - Entering tonight's game, No. 7 Spring Arbor had only allowed two goals in six Crossroads League games. Tonight, the Taylor women's soccer team scored four on the Cougars, but still lost in a thriller, 6-4.
The first half of a play proved to be an offensive battle. Spring Arbor outshot Taylor 13-4 in the opening 45-minutes of play, but TU took full advantage of their four opportunities, putting all four shots on goal.
The Trojans managed to find the scoreboard first in the second minute if play. Sophomore Nikki Zaino headed in a goal off a perfectly crossed ball from junior Shelbi Lowe to give Taylor the early 1-0 advantage.
10-minutes later, Taylor would strike again. After Lowe's shot attempt was blocked, sophomore Hadlee Yescott flew in to clean up the miss. The ball rolled right to Yescott's feet, who struck the ball firmly and put it past Spring Arbor goalie, Sarah Yancer for the 2-0 lead.
Despite Taylor's best efforts to keep the lead, Spring Arbor was able to tie the game up at 2-2 before the half. The Cougars' Aubrey Schierbeek scored Spring Arbor's first goal in the 24th-minute off a strike from 20 yards out, while SAU's Nikki Bonnema then scored the first-half equalizer in the 33rd-minute.
The second-half of play proved to be just as crazy as the first. Senior Courtney Selle scored her second goal of her career eight-minutes into the second half of play to put the Trojans up 3-2. That lead would not last long however. 50-seconds later, Spring Arbor knotted the game up at 3-3.
In the 62nd-minute, the Cougars would gain their first lead of the game, as Corrie Good would score to give SAU the 4-3 lead. TU would respond just ten minutes later. Zaino scored her second goal of the night in the 72nd-minute to tie the game back up again at 4-4.
Following Zaino's goal, Spring Arbor kept up their strong offensive attack. The offensive pressure would prove to payoff, as the Cougars would post the game-winner in the 80th-minute. SAU's Nikki Bonnema would score the game-winning goal to put Spring Arbor up 5-4, then would go on to record a hat trick less than a minute later, scoring again in the 81st-minute to post the final score of 6-4.
As the NAIA's leader in shots per game, Spring Arbor finished the contest with 29 shots, 18 of which came on goal. TU had eight shots in the game, but took full advantage of those shot opportunities by putting seven of them on net. Lowe and Zaino combined to record six of Taylor's eight shots tonight, while Yescott and Selle each had one.
Despite the six goals, freshman Lauren Enegelkes came up with big saves while in net for the Trojans. The keeper finished with a career-high 12 saves in the contest.
The Trojans will be back in action on Wednesday when the team travels to Ohio to take on No. 18 Mount Vernon Nazarene in a 4:00 p.m. start.
