Women's Soccer Season Comes to an End in Shootout
INDIANAPOLIS – The Taylor women's soccer season came to an end Saturday night in the first round of the Crossroads League Tournament. After playing to a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation and extra time, Marian was able to claim the win after outshooting the Trojans 4-2 in a shootout.
Taylor and Marian played to a 0-0 stalemate in the first half. Despite the halftime tie, the Trojans controlled the first half of play on the offensive end. The Trojans outshot the Knights 8-5 in the opening half, while four of TU's shots came on goal.
Sophomore Nikki Zaino led the offensive attack in the opening half, finishing with three of Taylor's eight shots, including two that were on net. While the offense found its rhythm, freshman Lauren Engelkes continued to play well in net, as the goalie saved both of Marian's first-half shot attempts.
The second half proved to favor Marian. The Knights outshot the Trojans 10-2 in the second half, but both teams were able to find the back of the net. Sophomore Hadlee Yescott broke the scoring silence, recording the first goal of the game in the 56th-minute to give Taylor a 1-0 lead.
The Knights would be quick to strike back, however. Marian's Logan Bowling was able to tie things back up at 1-1 after scoring in the 62nd-minute. Both teams had chances to notch the game winner, but neither could capitalize on their opportunities, forcing overtime.
In the first overtime, sophomore Megan Kammer gave the Trojans a quick shot just 29 seconds into the extra time. Her shot was saved by Marian's Melissa Sturgill. Marian was also able to record a shot attempt, but the attempt was saved my Engelkes.
In the second overtime period, Marian was able to record a quick shot just 15 seconds in. That shot attempt was again saved by Engelkes. Freshman Rebekah Schwulst recorded the only other shot attempt in the second extra time period, but it to was saved.
With the game still tied at 1-1, the game came down to a shootout. Marian took full advantage of the shootout, defeating Taylor 4-2 in it. Marian converted on all four of it attempts, while Taylor connected on just two of their four attempts.
Taylor finishes its 2015 season with a record of 8-8-3. The Trojans will lose just two starters this year's sqaud as the team moves in to the offseason to prepare for the 2016 campaign.
