UPLAND, Ind. – RV Taylor (8-0-1, 0-0-1) drew in its Crossroads League opener against Mount Vernon Nazarene (3-5-2, 0-0-1), 1-1, on Saturday afternoon.
Lauren Collins continued to be a force for the Trojan attack, scoring her fifth goal in six matches, with the assist provided by Kiana Siefert who has tallied six goals and two assists in her freshman campaign.
The Trojans and Cougars were locked into a physical battle in the first half, as the Crossroads League opener provided an added intensity to both squads.
TU grabbed the game's opener in the 23rd minute, as Collins scored her fifth goal of the season in her breakout sophomore campaign. Chloe Sena possessed the ball near midfield and produced a great pass to Siefert streaking down the right wing. Siefert took one touch toward the end line before crossing into the box, where Collins tapped in for the 1-0 lead.
The Cougars grew into the match and fired off three shots in the last seven minutes of the half, but TU's defense held them down for a 1-0 lead at the break.
The physicality grew in the second half, as both teams searched for the next goal.
The Cougars grabbed an equalizer on their only shot of the half in the 74th minute, as Savannah Zambory scored her seventh goal of the season.
The Trojans amped up the pressure afterward, but could not find the game-winner on any of the six shots launched in the final minutes.
TU tallied 17 shots compared to just six for the Cougars while taking eight corners with Mount Vernon Nazarene unable to earn a single corner kick.
RV Taylor returns to action on Wednesday, September 28 against Huntington (2-6-1, 0-0-0) on the road at 4:00 pm, as Crossroads League action continues.
