McQuade Nets Two Goals in All-Around Dominant Showing for Trojans
UPLAND, Ind. – The RV Taylor women's soccer team (8-1-4, 3-0-2 CL) recorded a staggering 47 shots in a 3-0 shutout over Huntington (6-6-1, 2-3-0) early Saturday evening. The 47 shot attempts eclipsed the previous season high by 10, and it marked the team's most since it also fired 47 shots in a 3-2 win on Sept. 29, 2021 – also against Huntington.
TU exerted its dominance early in the match by rattling off eight shots across the first dozen minutes while limiting the Foresters to just one, which was attempted from over 30 yards out.
The chances just kept coming for the Trojans' relentless attacking group throughout the first half, as it took eight corner kicks and led in the shots column by tenfold, 20-2, by the halftime intermission. The scoreboard at the break read 0-0 though, as an array of missed opportunities as well as five saves from HU goalie Ireland Aerni kept TU off the board.
Taylor wasted no time settling back in after the intermission, however, with the home team taking four shots in the first five minutes of the half, the last of which found the back of the net off the foot of Leah McQuade. The freshman was set up beautifully on the right side by Audrey Grimm, who tallied the assist. McQuade's goal lifted her into double digits in the points column on the season, and it served as a sign of things to come for the Trojans.
Amongst a continued onslaught of shots, Chloe Sena put TU on top 2-0 with an impressive goal – her team-leading eighth of the season – from the left side in the 56th minute.
With the game time winding down and possession continuing to be firmly secured by TU, both teams began dipping heavily into their reserves for the match's final 20 minutes. Soon after several mass substitutions, McQuade put the proverbial nail in the coffin with her second goal of the evening following a nice combination initiated by Lauren Collins. Collins dished the ball to Kiana Siefert up the far sideline, before Siefert's centering pass to McQuade gave the sophomore her second assist of the season.
Brianna Rawlings finished the game in net for the Trojans, while Hannah Brackenbury started and earned the win in the combined shutout effort, Taylor's fifth of the season.
Six Trojans took a minimum of four shots in the match, led by Sena's eight and McQuade's seven, four of which landed on frame. Grimm and Claire Massey also took six shots apiece. In all, 15 of the 47 shots went down as shots on goal for TU.
Taylor looks to keep its eight-game unbeaten streak going on Saturday, Oct. 14 at home against No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan (9-1-3, 3-0-1 CL), who currently sits one spot above the Trojans in the Crossroads League standings at second. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Turner Stadium.
