Trojans Find Groove, Defeat MVNU in Five Sets
UPLAND, Ind. – On Tuesday night, Taylor (3-6, 3-5 CL) and Mount Vernon Nazarene (3-4, 3-4 CL) battled in Upland with the Trojans coming out on top 19-25, 25-16, 25-16, 22-25, 15-11. TU put together an all-around effort, matching and setting season-highs in kills with 59 and digs with 86.
After dropping the first set, the Purple and Gold rebounded with five-consecutive points to begin set number two. The Taylor attack was dominant in the second game with 13 kills and a .393 hitting percentage.
Nikki Parrett led a four-point run in the second set using her serving prowess. The junior logged two service aces, while also forcing two easy returns that led to a pair of kills from Grace Isaacs.
The third set was nearly identical to the previous set, resulting in the same score in favor of Taylor, 25-16. Once again, Taylor jumped out to a 5-0 advantage and utilized another rally through Parrett's serves to create separation.
Kacy Bragg posted 31 assists through the initial three sets, orchestrating the strong Taylor offense. Bragg finished the match with a career-best 50 assists on Tuesday.
The Cougars fought back in the fourth set, forcing a make-or-break fifth set to 15 points.
With the match all square at two sets apiece, Taylor was the team to come up clutch. TU held a mere 5-4 edge before creating separation with four-straight points to extend its lead to five. The advantage would hold through the end of the match, as the Trojans picked up their third win of the season.
Amanda Adams delivered in the final moments of the match, netting four kills in the final set of the contest. The senior paced the team with 19 kills on the night, while adding 14 digs for her fourth double-double of 2020.
Defensively, sophomore Erin Peugh led a tenacious back row with a career-high 23 digs. Three other Trojans reached double-digit digs, including Adams and Karli Ware with 14 and Bragg with 13.
A stellar performance came in from Nicki Sechrist, as the junior connected on a season-high 12 kills. Sechrist never gave up an attack error, offering a .429 hitting percentage for the match.
Taylor will jump right back onto the court on Wednesday, battling Indiana Tech (0-0) on the road at 7:00 pm.
