Scott Powers Taylor to Sweep of Grace
UPLAND, Ind. – On a day when senior Amanda Adams recorded her 1,500th kill in a Trojan uniform, it was freshman, Sarah Scott, who stole the show with a career-high 15 kills in RV Taylor's three-set sweep of Grace (8-10, 3-7 CL) inside Odle Arena.
Saturday's match marked the start of the second-half of the Crossroads League schedule and TU showed no signs of slowing down. Taylor improved to 19-2 for the first time since owning a 23-2 clip in 2010 and notched a season sweep of the Lancers for the first time since 2016.
TU led throughout much of the action once again, but needed late rallies in each set to hold off the guests in the 25-20, 25-23, 25-23 decision.
In the opener, Taylor took a 16-12 lead only to have to call a timeout after Grace had rallied back to knot the margin at 17-17. TU came out of the break with six of the next seven points and went on to the 25-20 win. Scott set the tone with five kills in seven swings, while Stephaney Fifield posted 10 digs, two assists and one kill.
The middle game followed a similar script, with GC making a late push to cut the Taylor lead down to 22-21. This time, a block from Jaylynn Dunsmore and Grace Isaacs stemmed the tide and an Isaacs kill finished the 25-23 set. Scott stayed hot in the second, adding four more terminations on just seven swings.
Taylor unleashed Scott in the third and the middle hitter did not disappoint, shredding the Lancer defense with four more kills in the early going for a 10-5 TU start. Just like the first two games, Grace rallied back to force ties at 13-13 and 23-23. And just like the first two games, Taylor had the final say, getting a kill from Ryan Czerniak and a block from Kacy Bragg and Isaacs to secure the 25-23 win and match sweep.
With the Grace blockers keying on slowing down Taylor's senior hitters, Scott stepped into the spotlight and delivered a career-day, pacing the Trojans with 15 kills in 25 swings without a miscue. Scott also added two blocks and a .600 hitting percentage to fuel TU past the Lancers.
Czerniak finished the day with nine kills and three blocks, with Adams also tallying nine kills, two aces and nine digs and becoming Taylor's first player to surpass 1,500 career kills since Kelsey Pritchard (2008-2011).
Bragg recorded 39 assists and eight digs, Nikki Parrett added 13 digs and Fifield anchored the defense once again with 28 digs.
RV Taylor (19-2, 9-1 CL) is set to resume play on Wednesday, September 29, with a 7:00 pm start inside Odle Arena against Huntington (8-11, 3-7 CL).
