TU Closes the Onset Invitational with Clean Sweep
FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Taylor volleyball team (4-4) won its closing match of the Onset Invitational on Saturday evening with a 3-0 sweep over IU Southeast (0-5) that featured a pair of comebacks.
The Trojans cruised in the first set, using a .390 attack percentage to take it 25-16.
TU and IUSE traded scoring runs in set number two, as the Purple and Grey saw a 10-6 lead slip to a 17-12 deficit. Jaylynn Dunsmore played a crucial role in the Trojans climbing back out of the hole with five kills in an eight-point span as the frame came down to the wire. Tied at 25, Dunsmore and Reagan Salzbrenner notched back-to-back kills to give the Trojans a 27-25 win and a two-set lead.
A similar script followed in the third game, with Taylor grabbing an early lead before the Grenadiers held an advantage, 17-15. TU took 10 of the final 12 points, however, scoring on a pair of service aces from Chloe Holtz and a barrage of Trojan kills.
From the service line, Jen Springer and Suzanne Story tallied three aces apiece. Ava Kraft recorded a match-high 16 kills, followed by Dunsmore's dozen.
McKaylah Flagle and Holtz notched 19 and 12 digs, respectively, while Lindsay Springer set up the impressive attack with 39 assists.
TU dropped its first match of the day in straight sets versus RV Columbia International (7-1).
Dunsmore and Linsday Springer were the Trojans' statistical leaders in the morning match, with 12 kills for the senior right side hitter, and nine digs and 22 assists credited to the junior setter.
Taylor hosts its Amber McClure Fayerweather Memorial Tournament, which it begins on Friday at 11 a.m. versus Cornerstone (3-0) inside Odle Arena.
