Pentecost Named CL Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Crossroads League Athletes of the Week (March 11-17) | TU Honors Page
JACKSON, Mich. – Right-hander Gabel Pentecost added to his impressive sophomore season by picking up Crossroads League Pitcher of the Week honors for the week of March 11 through March 17. The weekly award is Pentecost's first of his young collegiate career.
Pentecost kicked off a series sweep over Grace on Friday, March 15, with a brilliant seven-inning start that largely fueled a 9-4 win. In those seven innings, the Freemont, Indiana, native racked up a career-high 11 strikeouts against no walks while allowing just six hits and two runs (both earned).
Further cementing his status as the Trojans' ace in 2024, Pentecost was perfect through 2.1 innings on Friday, with all seven of those outs coming via strikeouts. He appeared to have total command with every pitch, especially with a front-door breaking ball to right-handed batters that resulted in several looking strikeouts.
Pentecost (2-1) continued to cruise through his seven innings with pinpoint control, as he needed just 79 pitches (60 for strikes) against the 26 batters he faced.
The sophomore's performance tied his career-long outing of seven innings and added to a streak of seven-straight starts to open the season without allowing more than three runs. His earned-run average of 2.84 is tops in the Crossroads League among starting pitchers and his 1.11 WHIP ranks second.
Pentecost and TU's pitching staff looks to continue its recent stretch of success – having limited opponents to four or fewer runs in 12 of the past 16 games – when No. 21 Taylor (17-9, 10-2 CL) hosts Mount Vernon Nazarene (12-8, 8-2) in a series starting on Friday, March 22 at 2 p.m.
