No. 19 TU Struggles in Series Opener at OUAZ
SURPRISE, Ariz. – The No. 19 Taylor baseball team (3-2) fell 9-0 Friday in the first of a three-game series against RV Ottawa University Arizona (5-0).
TU struggled at the plate, scattering seven hits but never amassing more than one base knock in an inning.
Kaleb Kolpien was the only Trojan to record a multi-hit game, though Sam Gladd reached base twice and Mason David notched a double for the lineup's only extra-base hit. David's double marked the 45th of his career, which is eighth most in the program since 2006.
In the field, a failed pickoff attempt at second base and a misplay in center field allowed the Spirit to take a 1-0 lead in the first inning.
OUAZ tacked on one run each in the second, third and fourth frames to go ahead, 4-0.
Taylor's starter, Gabel Pentecost (1-1), completed a scoreless fifth inning to finish his outing with three earned runs allowed. He was steady with his command, however, striking out seven against no walks given up.
A five-run seventh inning for the Spirit broke the game open and kept Ottawa unbeaten in 2025.
Freshman Blake Osbourne made his collegiate debut in the eighth inning, working around three walks to put up a scoreless frame that included two strikeouts.
TU wraps up its Arizona swing Saturday with a double-header versus OUAZ. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 1 p.m. EST.
