JACKSON, Mich. – Freshman Rylee Singleton broke out in a big way during No. 18 Taylor baseball's series versus RV Indiana Wesleyan, batting .667 with two home runs, nine runs batted in and five runs scored. In doing so, Singleton earned his first career Crossroads League Player of the Week award, marking the second consecutive week the Trojans have collected the honor (Sam Gladd, April 1-7).
The infielder/designated hitter for TU started his strong series in game two on Friday, April 12, with a clutch pinch-hit appearance to lead off the bottom of the ninth in a tie ballgame. Singleton singled up the middle, and his replacement on the basepaths, Joe Lokos, scored the winning run.
Singleton also came through in the clutch in Saturday's first game as a pinch hitter. Down 8-5 with the bases loaded in the sixth inning, the Evansville, Ind., native grabbed a bat and hit a go-ahead grand slam to the batter's eye in center field, the first of two grand slams Taylor hit in the frame.
The freshman got the nod as the designated hitter in the series finale, when he wreaked havoc with a four-hit game that included another homer, five RBIs and four runs scored in leading TU a 24-1 win over its cross-county rivals.
First-place, 18th-ranked Taylor (29-13, 22-6 CL) hopes to continue swinging the bats well when it travels to face Marian (20-17, 15-11) on Thursday at 3 p.m.
