Craig Sets WHAC Assists Record in Senior Day Loss to No. 7 Aquinas
Craig's Record-Breaking Assist
UPLAND, Ind. – Aidan Craig became the all-time leading assist artist in Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference history on Saturday, dishing out three helpers to climb into the record books with his 176th assist but the RV Trojans fell by a 12-5 count on Senior Day to No. 7 Aquinas.
Craig assisted on back-to-back Taylor scores early in the second period to claim a share of history, finding Jackson Dale and Carter Prieditis for scores at the 13:25 and 11:24 mark of the period to draw TU within a single score at 4-3.
The Trojans remained within striking distance for the rest of the half, as an unassisted strike from Reid Gerig made it a 6-4 contest with 30 seconds left before intermission. The Saints (7-1, 3-1 WHAC) fired back with two goals in the final 11 seconds to widen the gap to 8-4.
Craig made history and got the scoring started for Taylor with 9:06 left in the third, hitting Will Saxby for TU's fifth goal of the afternoon and Craig's record-setting 176th assist. The assist moved Craig in front of Jared Yoshino of Lourdes (2014-2017) for the top spot in WHAC history.
That score proved to be TU's final of the match however, as Aquinas held the Trojans off the scoreboard over the final 24:05 of game action, netting the day's final four goals and steadily pulling away for the 12-5 win.
Craig ended with the three assists, while Prieditis was TU's lone player with multiple goals. Ben Harrell was busy in net, recording 12 saves.
Despite the struggle to put the ball in the net, Taylor played evenly with the Saints in many of the stats categories, managing just one fewer shot than the guests and matching Aquinas in turnovers.
The difference came in the faceoff battle, as Aquinas won 13-of-18 faceoffs and never allowed the Taylor offense to find its rhythm.
RV Taylor (4-8, 1-4 WHAC) will return to action in one week at Lourdes (3-5, 0-4 WHAC) for an 11:00 am start on April 13.
