TU Softball Dominant in Two Wins over Northwood
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – No. 25 Taylor softball relied on its high-powered offense in game one and used quality pitching from Hannah Robbins and Maddie Cornell in game two to sweep the doubleheader with Northwood (Fla.) on Wednesday afternoon.
The Trojan offense took little time to get going in the opener, scoring five runs in the top half of the first inning to gain the upper hand. The lead swelled to the game's final score of 10-3 by the fourth inning, as the Trojans got the majority of its 14 hits for the game in that time frame.
Taylor pitching held Northwood scoreless over the final four innings and the Trojans had produced all the runs that they would need. Ashley Miller earned the win in the circle in her first start of the 2015 season.
Damage was done all throughout the Taylor lineup. Miller helped her own cause by hitting a two-run homer in the second inning and finished 2-4 with three runs scored and two RBI. Taylor Murray and Morgan Allison each went 2-4 and had two RBI, while Allison came around home for a run. Lauren Ehle and Hannah Robbins each were 2-4 with an RBI and run scored, and Anna Gunderson went 2-5 with two runs scored and an RBI for the second spot in the batting order.
In game two, Taylor once again opened the scoring in the first inning as Davis Carter brought leadoff hitter Alex Lovelace around to score with an RBI single. The Trojans added two more runs in both the third and fourth innings to grab a 5-0 lead before plating the final score for the 6-0 final in the seventh inning.
Robbins pitched the first two innings of the game, striking out one without conceding a hit. Maddie Cornell came in and pitched extremely well in the final five innings to shutout the Northwood lineup out. Cornell gave up just three hits while walking two and striking out five batters.
The center fielder Lovelace went 3-4 with two RBI and a run scored, while Carter drove in two runs, scored a run and was 1-3 from the plate. Murray finished 2-3 with a walk, run scored and RBI double in the seventh. Ehle was also 1-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
No. 25 Taylor (3-1) will next play in the Auburn-Montgomery Tournament in Montgomery, Alabama on February 20-21. Further information on the tournament will be provided when matchups and schedule of play are determined.
