CROWN POINT, Ind. – No. 25 Taylor softball fell in both games of a doubleheader Friday to Purdue Calumet at the Sparta Dome in Crown Point, Indiana. The Peregrines came away with a 3-0 win in game one and a 9-3 victory in game two for the sweep.
The Taylor offense was able to produce eight hits in the opener against Purdue Calumet but was unable to plate a run. Purdue Calumet senior starter Alison Kimble earned the complete game shutout without conceding an extra-base knock, finishing with a career-high strikeout total of 13 Taylor batters.
Hannah Robbins took the loss for Taylor from the circle, pitching all six innings and allowing three earned runs, one each in her final three innings of work. The sophomore gave up eight Peregrine hits while striking out four.
Alex Lovelace went 3-4 from the plate from her leadoff position in the lineup with three singles, and Ashley Miller was 2-3 as well.
In game two the Peregrines jumped out to a 3-0 advantage after two innings, a lead that would swell to 7-1 after four innings of play. Miller started the contest from the circle for the Trojans and lasted three innings, conceding six hits but allowing just one earned run before exiting with Taylor down 5-1.
Hannah Klebesadel came in to pitch the final three innings for Taylor but allowed four earned runs on five walks and five hits, one of which was a home run as the Peregrine offense continued to be effective.
The Taylor offense brought around a run in each of the final two innings but needed more to overcome the deficit.
Lauren Ehle blasted her first home run of the season to start the sixth inning to make it 7-2. The Trojans were able to load the bases with no outs not soon after but Kimble was able to maneuver out of the jam without seeing the Peregrine lead cut into.
Kellie Mink earned the win from the circle for Purdue Calumet in five innings pitched, allowing just two runs, one earned on Ehle's solo shot.
Lovelace was 2-4 with a run scored, and Ehle finished 2-4 driving in two with a double and the home run. Robbins went 2-3 from the plate and Jessica Britt was 1-2 with a double and a run scored to account for the majority of the Taylor offense.
Taylor (6-6) has now dropped five of its last six against high level competition, concluding its non-Crossroads League play Friday with the losses to Purdue Calumet. The Trojans will next play in their home opener against league foe Grace this upcoming Tuesday. The first game of the doubleheader will begin at 3:00 pm at Gudakunst Field.
