Trojans Take Two from Union to Open 2018 Season
BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Taylor University softball team posted a pair of road wins over Union on Friday, defeating the Bulldogs, 10-1, in game one and 7-2 in game two to open its 2018 campaign.
TU held a slim, 2-1 lead over Union (1-7) entering the sixth inning in the first game of the doubleheader, before Hannah Castor delivered a solo home run to lead off the sixth frame to open Taylor's eight-run outburst over the final two innings for the 10-1 final tally.
Darby Shaw (1-0) secured the win in the circle, going the distance and allowing just one run on five hits and striking out one in her debut with the Purple and Gold.
In the second contest, the Trojans scored three runs apiece in the third and fourth innings to take a 6-0 lead, before tacking on another run in the seventh. Union plated a run in the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings to make the 7-2 final score.
Lauren Kanai (1-0) also registered a win in her Taylor debut inside the circle, going all seven innings and allowing two runs on five hits with three strikeouts.
Seven Trojans recorded at least two hits on the day, led by Castor's 5-for-8 with a double, a home run, three runs scored and three runs batted in. Taylor Wilson had a nearly identical outing, going 5-for-8 at the dish, with a home run, three runs scored and three RBIs, while Courtney Moriarty went 4-for-7 with a double and two RBIs.
Davis Carter and Erin Cozad each notched three hits, Cassie Kuizin tallied two base-knocks and scored three runs, Olivia Hostetler collected two hits and Ashley Roberts recorded a hit in her TU debut.
RV Taylor (2-0) will play two more games against Union on Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled for 12:00 pm.
