UPLAND, Ind. – The TU softball team earned a doubleheader sweep of Grace at Gudakunst Field on Thursday, recording wins of 5-0 and 7-1 over the Lancers.
Courtney Moriarty (2-2) turned in an impressive performance inside the circle in game one, scattering five hits, striking out five and walking one, while posting her first complete game and her first shutout of the season.
Offensively, Moriarty helped out her own cause with a 1-for-2 outing at the plate. The junior scored a run and ripped a two-run double to lead seven Trojans with one hit apiece in the 5-0 win in game one.
In the nightcap, Grace (10-26, 4-18 CL) plated its only run of the day in the opening frame to take a 1-0 lead.
The Lancers held the lead very briefly, as TU would push across four of its seven runs in the home-half of the first to regain the advantage.
After Cassie Kuizin grounded out to begin the stanza, Kara Tucker walked, Moriarty singled and Hannah Castor singled to bring home Moriarty and tie the game at 1-1. Davis Carter then lifted the very next pitch over the center-field fence for a three-run blast to put the Purple and Gold up, 4-1, entering the second inning.
Moriarty added an RBI single in the second, while Taylor Wilson's sacrifice fly and Erin Cozad's single in the sixth accounted for the final three TU runs.
Carter's round-tripper highlighted a 3-for-4 day with two runs scored and three runs driven in, while Moriarty enjoyed a 3-for-4 night at the dish and Castor and Kuizin each collected a pair of hits. The quartet tallied 10 of Taylor's 12 hits in the nightcap.
Lauren Kanai (9-4) earned the win in the circle for Taylor and combined with Darby Shaw to hold Grace to four hits in the final game of the doubleheader.
Taylor (18-10, 12-8 CL) will travel to Goshen tomorrow for a twinbill against the Maple Leafs (14-25-1, 6-14-1 CL), with the first pitch set for 4:00 pm.
