Trojans Sweep Season Series with Goshen
GOSHEN, Ind. – The Taylor softball team swept its second-straight opponent on Friday night, run-ruling Goshen, 8-0, in six innings in game one, before coming from behind to take home a 7-4 win in game two.
TU was in complete control in the opening contest, using a five-run third inning to result in the 8-0 win.
Sophomore Erin Cozad blasted a pair of two-run home runs in three at-bats for a career-high four runs batted in to lead the Trojans offensively. Courtney Moriarty went 3-for-4, Cassie Kuizin collected two hits and Lauren Kanai reached base safely in all three of her plate appearances.
In the circle, Moriarty (3-2) earned the win, giving up just three hits in four innings of work and has now gone 11-consecutive innings without a run surrendered. Kanai posted two no-hit innings to preserve the win from the rubber.
Goshen (14-27-1, 6-16-1 CL) cracked the scoreboard first in game two, taking a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second, but the Trojans put two runs up in the third inning to go up 2-1. Olivia Hostetler scored on a bases-loaded walk and then Davis Carter's single drove in the second score.
The Maple Leafs jumped back in front in the bottom of the third, after hitting a lead-off round-tripper and later driving in a run on a single.
Kara Tucker's RBI single in the fourth tied the game at 3-3, and three more Trojan RBI singles in the fifth put Taylor up for good. Carter added her third home run of the season in the sixth to punctuate the TU sweep.
Carter was perfect at the dish, going 3-for-3 with two RBI, including the solo home run. Cozad, Tucker and Hostetler each tallied a pair of hits to contribute to the win in the nightcap.
Jessica Doctor (2-0) earned her second-career win in the circle, scattering five hits and allowing one run in four innings, while Kanai secured her first-career save by pitching the final frame.
Taylor (20-10, 14-8 CL) will play another road doubleheader on Saturday in its next competition, as the Trojans travel to Saint Francis (17-18, 10-12 CL), with the first pitch set for noon.
