FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Taylor softball team avenged its two home losses to Saint Francis earlier in the season by beating USF, 3-1 and 10-1, at Saint Francis on Saturday afternoon. TU extended its winning streak to a season-high six games with the doubleheader sweep.
Taylor and USF were in a scoreless tie through five innings complete in game one, before Courtney Moriarty delivered a solo home run with two outs in the sixth to put TU ahead, 1-0.
Saint Francis quickly tied the game once again, as an RBI double in the home-half of the sixth made it a 1-1 ballgame heading into the seventh frame.
Taylor Wilson doubled and advanced to third on a passed ball to give the Trojans a runner on third with one out in the seventh, but two-straight outs gave the Cougars a chance to win it in the bottom of the seventh.
USF loaded the bases with two outs in the home-half of the seventh, but could not bring home the game-winning run, sending the contest into extra innings.
In the eighth, Kara Tucker walked and Moriarty singled to give Taylor runners on first and second with one out. Then a sacrifice bunt from Hannah Castor moved the baserunners to second and third with two outs, and Davis Carter followed with the go-ahead, two-run single to put TU on top, 3-1.
The Cougars got a lead-off walk in the home-half, but Darby Shaw retired the final three USF hitters to shut the door on the hosts' comeback hopes and record her second save of the season.
Moriarty (4-2) won her third-straight start inside the circle, putting in seven innings of work, scattering six hits, striking out four and allowing just one run.
Offensively, Moriarty led the way by collecting two of TU's four hits, scoring twice and driving in one run in the extra-inning triumph. Carter went 1-for-3 at the plate, with her only base knock providing the two go-ahead runs in the eighth.
The Purple and Gold completely dominated the second contest, racking up 13 hits and scoring 10 runs, while allowing Saint Francis to put just one run on the board on four hits. The Trojans also took advantage of four Cougar errors in the 10-1 win.
Tucker was 3-for-5 with two runs and a career-high-tying three runs driven in to highlight four Trojans with multi-hit games. Kuizin, Moriarty and Wilson each recorded a pair of hits and a pair of runs apiece to round out the multi-hit performances.
From the rubber, Lauren Kanai (10-4) pitched four innings, allowing four hits and one run to earn the 10th win of her freshman campaign. Shaw threw two no-hit frames with three punch outs to finish off the TU win.
Taylor (22-10, 16-8 CL) will next play another road doubleheader on Monday, as TU travels to Grace (12-28, 6-20 CL) to finish the season series, with the first pitch set for 3:00 pm. The Trojans defeated Grace, 5-0 and 7-1, at Gudakunst Field on Thursday in the first two meetings between the squads this season.
