Fort Wayne, Ind. – RV Taylor (14-6, 2-2 CL) recorded its first two Crossroads League victories of the season against Saint Francis, sweeping the Cougars 5-4 and 2-1 in a two-game series.
The Trojans hit .349 as a team in the two contests, collecting 22 hits, six of which were for extra bases. Kanai, Ashton Whitman, Caitlyn Grim, and Kara Tucker each finished with three hits, while Aleyah Rastetter, Taylor Wilson, and Emma West each recorded two knocks apiece. Additionally, Kanai drove in three runs, West plated two, and both Grim and Tucker collected an RBI.
The Trojans faced an early deficit in the opener, falling behind 2-0 after the second inning of play, but they began to find their offensive groove in the third frame. After West reached on an error, back-to-back doubles from Tucker and Kanai tied the contest at 2-2.
In the following inning, an RBI double from Grim and back-to-back RBI singles produced three more runs for the Trojans, giving the Purple and Gold a three-run lead.
The Cougars (4-10, 2-2 CL) rallied in the seventh frame, scoring two runs, but the Trojans held on as Cassy Lewis induced the game-ending groundout to secure the victory.
Evans (7-3) earned her seventh victory of the season, giving up four hits and two runs while striking out eight, increasing her Crossroads League-leading strikeout total to 80 in the process.
Despite nine hits in game two, the Trojans would not crack the scoreboard until the top of the sixth inning. On a 2-1 count, Kanai collected her fourth home run of the season, giving Taylor an advantage it would not relinquish. West added a little insurance for the Trojans in the top of the seventh, singling home Jacqueline Ryals, who began the frame with a pinch-hit single, for a 2-0 Taylor lead.
For the second straight contest, the Cougars rallied, cutting the Trojans' lead in half with a home run in the bottom of the seventh. However, a Kanai strikeout and a force out by Tucker at second base secured the doubleheader sweep for TU.
Kanai (6-3) recorded her first complete-game victory of the season, allowing just four hits and one run while striking out eight Cougars.
The Trojans will be back at Gudakunst Field on Monday, where they will face off against Grace (1-17, 1-3 CL) in a two-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
