UPLAND, Ind. – RV Taylor (20-10, 8-6 CL) suffered just its third series loss of the season, dropping a pair of contests to Mount Vernon Nazarene (10-4, 8-4 CL) at Gudakunst Field. Taylor fell 7-5 in game one, giving up four runs in the top of the seventh inning, before putting just two runners on base in an 8-0 defeat in the nightcap.
Aleyah Rastetter put together a stout performance at the plate in the opener, finishing 3-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in, while Ashton Whitman went 2-for-4 with two RBI. Taylor Wilson collected a hit and an RBI, while Kara Tucker, Lauren Kanai, and Kristin Mihalic each added one knock apiece.
Rastetter started the scoring for the Trojans, plating Lexi Abruzzo in the second inning for the 1-0 advantage. MVNU got the run back in the top of the fourth, but Taylor responded with four runs of its own in the bottom half of the frame. Rastetter singled home Nicole Brindle to start the inning, before Wilson followed with a double to deep right-center, plating Rastetter and increasing the Trojans' advantage to 3-1. Whitman capped off the scoring with a single to left field, scoring Caitlyn Grim and Emma West for the 5-1 lead.
However, the Trojans were held off the scoreboard for the rest of the contest and would not score again for the remainder of the afternoon. The Cougars came roaring back in final three innings, scoring two runs in the fifth and four in the seventh to secure the victory.
Maddi Evans continued to make history for the Trojans, collecting four more strikeouts to pass Hannah Klebsadel (128 – 2012) and tie with Holly Tomaszewski (130 – 2011) for the second-most strikeouts by a Taylor pitcher in a single season. The Fairmount, Indiana native needs just 32 more punchouts to become Taylor's all-time single season leader.
The Taylor offense struggled in the nightcap, recording just one hit in the six-inning affair. The Cougars did a majority of their damage in the third inning, scoring six runs, three of which came on a pair of Trojan errors. MVNU added two more runs in the sixth to secure the doubleheader sweep.
The Trojans will be back at Gudakunst Field tomorrow for another Crossroads League doubleheader against Bethel (10-23, 3-11 CL). First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
