MOUNT VERNON, Ohio. – Seven combined runs in the fifth and sixth innings by No. 25 Mount Vernon Nazarene (32-14) shut down a potential upset for the Trojans in their matchup in the Crossroads League Tournament.
Both teams flooded the basepaths throughout the first four innings, with Taylor taking advantage by plating two runs in the first inning while holding the Cougars scoreless before the fifth frame.
While Taylor (23-29) scored in the early going, missed opportunities came back to haunt them. The Trojans left 12 runners on base throughout the contest, including failing to score with the bases loaded and one out in the fourth.
Mady Foy had navigated her way through four innings, leaving six runners on base to keep Taylor ahead 2-0. The freshman pitched five-and-a-third innings and gave up six runs with one strikeout in her postseason debut.
The first two batters of the game reached base and scored, first on a sacrifice fly by Delaney Barton, before Caitlyn Grim laced a line drive single to score Aleyah Rastetter from third and hand TU an early 2-0 lead.
Grim scored the next run in the top of the fifth on another sac fly before MVNU scored four runs with two outs in the bottom half to take the lead 4-3.
The Trojans tied the game with their next at-bat. Emma West laced a double to left field and scored with one out on an RBI single by Livie Lehmann.
The Cougars had three more runs cross the plate in the bottom of the sixth to break the tie and earn the victory.
Seniors Grim and West led the team with two base knocks apiece, with West scoring two runs and Grim grabbing a run and an RBI in the contest.
Taylor will look to keep its season alive with a win on Friday, May 5, against the loser of the matchup between No. 9 Marian (42-6) and Spring Arbor (31-16), with first pitch scheduled for 10:00 am.
